considered one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon an
author and their collection of work. The assembly or editing of such
works requires a great deal of skill and an exorbitant amount of time and
money, which is why they function as a screenin g process or safeguard
for the canonization of writers. In addition, these projects have become
a form of commemoration, a platform for unpubli shed materi als to be
released, and an attempt to solidify the legacy of important texts and
authors in history. Consequently, the editors and the philologists
entrusted with projects hold great authority and responsibility. Although the editor exercises great power in the decision of what to
include in the edition, the question of how the material is assembled can also have great implications.

mind, has had an impact on the perception of the historical J.M.R. Lenz's
illness predominantly through an authentic and persuasive narration that
mingles the voices of a compassionate narrator and the suffering poet. In his fictional rendition of the account, originally documented in the diaries of Pastor J.F. Oberlin, Büchner uses the unique relationship between the poet and the pastor to comment creatively on the suffering of humanity and the
religious fanaticism that inhibited political change during his lifetime.

With the help of Die Maßnahme, connections between German and American communities can be drawn via Brecht’s exile, FBI trial, and subsequent return back to the former GDR.
Two central aspects of Die Maßnahme that facilitate language acquisition are the collective characters and the central recapitulating narrative. Firstly, the collective roles break down many students’ affective filters. Oftentimes, traditional individualized roles single out students and add performance pressures on top of psychological anxieties in the classroom. With Brecht’s emphasis on group roles, such as the Kontrollchor (Control Chorus), all students can perform collectively, which creates a space for self-correction and peer-based learning. Secondly, this particular play retells the story of the Young Comrade. In so doing, it contains an inherent grammatical focus between the simple and conversational past tenses. As the Imperfect is often not spoken aloud, this staging provides a framework to practice on verb pronunciation in this tense.
What is more, this play situates Brecht between the American McCarthyism he encountered in exile and his return back to the newly formed German Democratic Republic. Its historical significance in Brecht’s interrogation by the FBI prompts further questions about Communism and its party system, authorship and censorship, interpretation and translation. Overall, Die Maßnahme targets and meets, I will argue, all of the standards for foreign language learning: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. When brought into classroom as a staging, Brecht’s play of unique historical, theatrical, and critical significance makes for an equally rich text when “performing to learn” German as a second language.

Simultaneously, Sebald demonstrates and practices the Benjaminian art of remembrance. Just as Jacques Austerlitz becomes arrested by the face he believes to be his mother, so, too, must the reader fixedly contemplate the same crystallized still from the Nazi propaganda film. These “pearls,” if you will, are salvaged by Austerlitz and further polished by Sebald through the intertextuality of his work — an intertexutality that I would argue runs through the veins of his oeuvre culminating in beating heart of his opus magnum.

Together with Helga Mitterbauer, Jacques Lajarrige carefully edits the papers and assembles a compilation of academic genres and languages. In addition, an account from Morgenstern's son, Dan, recalls his father's relationship to music and the personal and professional connection music created between them. Lastly, the volume concludes with the correspondence between Soma Morgenstern and Theodor W. Adorno, spanning almost four decades and ending, as the subtitle suggests, in American exile.
